Ask Maps now takes edits from the public
In its Ask Maps announcement on August 6, 2026, Google said conversational contributions are rolling out in the U.S., along with food ordering, with more countries to come.
Google's Maps help page on Ask Maps says that inside an Ask Maps conversation, a person can share tips, upload photos or update information about places. Your business is one of those places. Google's own post says edits can be suggested right from Ask Maps and the Contribute tab. A customer who thinks your hours are wrong can say so in the middle of a chat about where to eat tonight.
This adds to something Google already explains in its Business Profile help: customers may see details you never added, like a link to a menu or photos other customers uploaded. The listing a customer sees is partly yours and partly everyone else's.
That means it can drift while you are busy with other things. The only way to know is to look at it the way a customer does, in Google Maps on your phone.
Google may call your shop to check your hours
Google may call, text or send a WhatsApp message to your business to confirm details like opening hours or whether you offer a service. Whatever the person who picks up says may be used to update your profile. On a busy Saturday, that person might be whoever was closest to the phone.
When Google uses something from one of those conversations to post on your behalf, it sends you an email about the update. Those emails are easy to lose in a full inbox, so look for them on purpose.
If you would rather Google not ask, a verified owner can turn the automated calls and texts off under Advanced settings. Two of the switches there are called Keep your profile up to date and Post to your profile on your behalf. If your business is not verified yet, Google's help page says you have to verify before you can opt out. The steps are on Google's page about automated calls and texts.
Whether to switch them off is your call. If the phone at your shop gets answered by whoever is free, turning off Keep your profile up to date is the safer choice. If you answer every call yourself, leaving it on costs you little.
The Collected info tab shows what Google collected
Google's help page on editing a Business Profile now describes a tab called Collected info, under Edit profile. It lists what Google gathered from its calls and messages, with the source and the date each item was collected.
Not every owner has it yet. Google says the tab is available only in select regions, languages and business categories. If you do not see it, that is the likely reason.
If you do have it, look for an hours entry with a collection date you do not remember.
Three more fields to check: chat, posts and holiday hours
This part is not news. These are fields worth a fresh look while you are already in Edit profile.
Chat
A verified business can add a WhatsApp or text message option in the Chat field, under Edit profile then Contact. If you add both, customers see only the text option. Pick the one someone at your shop actually reads during the day.
Posts
A post can wait until later: turn on Schedule this post, then pick the date and time. The Repeats menu sets a weekly, monthly or custom repeat. One weekly post with a standing offer, set once, is less work than remembering to post every Monday.
Holiday hours
Google's help page says special hours are how you change hours for holidays or other temporary periods, separate from your main hours. Set them now for Thanksgiving and the days around Christmas and New Year's, before the season starts. Then your main hours never need touching, and there is nothing to forget to change back in January.
What to do
- Open Google Maps on your phone, find your business, and check the hours, phone number and address against what is true today.
- In your Business Profile, open Edit profile and look for Collected info. If an item there is wrong, fix the live field in Edit profile, because deleting the item does not change your profile.
- Search your email for messages from Google about updates it posted on your behalf.
- Decide about the automated calls. The path is More, then Business Profile settings, then Advanced settings, then the section called Google automated calls and text messages, where you will find Keep your profile up to date and Post to your profile on your behalf. Read the line under each switch before you change it.
- Set special hours for every holiday between now and New Year's Day.
- Check the Chat field under Edit profile then Contact and make sure it goes to a phone someone reads.
- Schedule one post with Schedule this post and set Repeats to weekly.
