What an answer engine is and how it changes the way customers find a small business online.

Answer engine: An answer engine is a search tool that replies to a question with a written answer instead of a list of links. It searches the web for pages that match the question and writes a response from what they say, usually with links to the pages it drew on. Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT search and Perplexity work this way. For a business, the practical difference is that a customer may read a summary of your page before, or instead of, visiting it, so the words on the page have to hold up when quoted.
Where it shows up
You meet answer engines at the top of a Google results page and inside chat assistants that can search the web. The answer comes first, and the sources sit beside or beneath it as small links.
For a small business site this changes what a good page looks like. A clear answer in the first lines of a page, and facts that match your other listings, make it easier for an engine to use the page as a source and describe you correctly.
