What changed this week: Google's Universal Cart reaches US shoppers

Google's cart went live in Search and Gemini, and Shopify stores may have direct checkout in Google AI Mode and Gemini on. Plus X's new plan and more.

In short

Google's Universal Cart started reaching US shoppers in Search and the Gemini app on October 15, and eligible Shopify stores have direct checkout in Google AI Mode and Gemini on by default. The rest of the week is a price list to check, not a task: X's combined plan, Meta's new model and Nvidia's new laptops.

Google's shopping cart is live in Search and Gemini

Google began rolling out Universal Cart to US shoppers in Google Search and the Gemini app on October 15, 2026. Shoppers can save items there, and Google sends an alert when a saved item drops in price or comes back in stock. Google's own post is on the Universal Cart launch page.

When it is time to pay, the shopper can use Google Pay inside the cart or move the items into the store's own cart. Either way, the store stays the seller of record and handles the confirmation and the support. So the customer is still yours, and so is the email when a box arrives damaged.

Google names Nike, Sephora, Target, Ulta Beauty, Walmart, Wayfair and many Shopify merchants as stores where the simpler checkout works at launch. For a small shop, the part of that list to notice is the last one.

If you sell on Shopify, direct checkout may already be on

On Shopify, direct checkout in Google AI Mode and Gemini is turned on by default once a store is eligible. That means you may be selling through direct checkout in Google AI Mode and Gemini without having clicked anything.

The setting sits in the Shopify admin under Sales channels, then Agentic. Shopify explains it on its Google AI Mode and Gemini help page.

The money side is simple. Shopify charges no extra fee for sales through direct checkout in Google AI Mode and Gemini, only your standard payment processing fees.

Think of a bakery that ships cookie tins but sells birthday cakes for pickup only. The tins fit Shopify's direct checkout in Google AI Mode and Gemini fine. The cakes do not, because there is no pickup option there.

You can switch it off. If a Shopify store turns direct checkout off, shoppers in Google AI Mode and Gemini still see its products, but they are sent to the store's own site to buy. On your own site, they get whatever pickup and delivery options you already set up.

So the choice is between two paths. Keep Shopify's direct checkout in Google AI Mode and Gemini on if most of what you sell ships in a box. Turn it off if pickup or local delivery is how most of your orders leave the shop.

If you sell on another platform

For stores not on Shopify, Google says the UCP integration hub in Merchant Center is rolling out gradually in the US. To join, a store fills out an interest form and waits for Google to select it. Nothing turns on by itself here, you ask and then you wait.

The steps and the form are on Google's Merchant Center help page.

X folds Grok, Cursor and X Premium into one plan

On October 12, 2026, X launched The X Subscription, which puts Grok, Cursor and X Premium in one plan. TechCrunch lists a free tier, Plus at $8 a month, Premium at $30, Super at $100 and Ultra at $200. xAI's own post is on its X Subscription page.

If you already pay for SuperGrok, Cursor or X Premium, you can keep your current plan and price, or move to the new subscription. Nothing changes on your card unless you switch.

This is worth five minutes if you pay for two of these separately today. Add up what you pay now and compare it with the one tier that covers the same things. If the single tier costs more, stay where you are.

The rest of the week, briefly

Meta made Muse Wonder available through the Meta Model API on October 12, 2026. TechCrunch reports the price at $4 per million input tokens and $20 per million output tokens. This matters only if someone builds tools for your shop on top of it, and most shops can skip it.

Nvidia says RTX Spark laptops went on sale on October 16, 2026, from ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo, Microsoft and MSI, starting at $2,599. If your current laptop runs your register and your email without trouble, this is not a reason to replace it.

What to do

  • If you sell on Shopify, open your admin, go to Sales channels, then Agentic, and see whether direct checkout in Google AI Mode and Gemini is on.
  • If pickup or local delivery is how most orders leave your shop, decide whether to turn direct checkout off so shoppers buy on your own site.
  • If you sell on another platform, fill out the interest form on Google's Merchant Center help page.
  • Read your order confirmation email once more, since you stay the seller of record and send it either way.
  • If you pay for X Premium, SuperGrok or Cursor, do nothing unless one tier of The X Subscription costs less than what you pay now.

Every site we build ships with its search and answer-engine baseline, and the websites page says what that covers.

Common questions

Do I need to sign up for checkout in Google AI Mode and Gemini?

On Shopify, no. Direct checkout in Google AI Mode and Gemini is on by default once your store is eligible, and you'll find it under Sales channels, then Agentic. On other platforms, Google says the UCP integration hub in Merchant Center is rolling out gradually in the US, and you fill out an interest form and wait for Google to select your store.

Who is the seller when someone buys my product through Google's cart?

You are. Google says the shopper pays with Google Pay in the cart or moves the items to your own cart, and either way you stay the seller of record and handle confirmations and support.

Does Shopify charge extra for orders that come through Google AI Mode and Gemini?

No. Shopify says there is no extra fee for direct checkout in Google AI Mode and Gemini, only your standard payment processing fees.

Can customers choose local pickup when they buy through direct checkout in Google AI Mode and Gemini?

Not on Shopify. Its direct checkout in Google AI Mode and Gemini does not support local delivery, pickup in store or pickup points. If you turn direct checkout off, shoppers are sent to your own site to buy instead.

I pay for X Premium. Does the new X Subscription change my bill?

Not unless you switch. X says people who already pay for SuperGrok, Cursor or X Premium can keep their current plan and price, or move to the new subscription.
